Studio paintings…

Feature . 2020/22

These paintings that are shown below are a representative snap-shot of what I am currently working on in the studio. They are not in any specific chronologically order or hierarchy of sequence. These paintings have been produced in the period since 2017. All of these works are in acrylic on canvas and are for sale direct from the studio without commission and the prices where shown are indicative. (Please contact me at: be4tle@mac.com if at all interested)

“So what’s my practice?”

My practice is abstract painting. My process involves the performance of mark making in a temporal relationship to the construction of colour compositions. The making process is not a subjective self-expressionistic action, but much more a knowingly narrative expressionistic act. This practice is a conscious and objective process of painterly-performance and composition. My practice is analogous to the making, editing and performance of a musical composition.

This current series of paintings are an abstract exploration of colour composition and time-based mark making in the context of mapping, measurement and observation. My primary concern is with the use of colour and the construction of the composition through the interaction of a repertoire of visual elements, in relation to narratives of navigation, exploration and scientific enquiry.

Thanks for your time.

The story of my Covid 19 Painting.

Feature 2. Covid 19 studio painting

The story in pictures of a particular painting.

During the first Lock-Down from the end of March to the beginning of June 2020, I decided to do something different to my usual “didn’t we all?”… I guess a large element of initial fear and loathing followed by a need just to focus on something. A different kind of challenge.

“…It’s what it is.”

This is a series of images of the painting “Gyre” under construction from the first marks within the composition to the final thing, …dead-ends, mistakes, mess and all… I will upload more as I edit through the process to the final conclusion of the painting. The painting is all but complete, but there is always that cooling off period before making appropriate adjustments.
